Dear Writer, Give Yourself Time to Heal

As writers, when setting goals and deadlines for our projects, it’s important that we are sensitive to God’s timing. You may be wondering why you’re so frustrated or you seem to come against a wall every time you sit down to write. Could it just be that you have the right message, but it’s just the wrong time? Could it possibly be that your story needs a little more developing or maybe it’s still being written within the pages of your reality? Or if your story is one of trauma and abuse, have you given yourself an adequate amount of time to heal?

I don’t think we understand the power of language. Through writing, we have the ability to transfer emotions and experiences. You words have the power to either harm or inspire, while impacting the reader in various other ways. The saying that goes: “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me,” is far from accurate. The bible tells us that: “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21) You words carry weight. When we dont take the proper time to heal, our words can be tainted with traces of confusion, hatred, unforgiveness, bitterness, etc. I want my words to add life to those who come in contact with it. I want my writing to bring hope. I want to be a voice that lets others know that they are not alone in their experience, that I understand what they are going through and like me, God can transform their pain into purpose.

“Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” – Ephesians 4:29

You don’t need to succumb to the pressure of believing that you need what society says you do in order to be successful. We are so eager to publish a book, step on a platform, start speaking, teaching, preaching, or whatever it may be… but many of us haven’t even taken the time to really sit at the feet of the #1 Counselor, the Holy Spirit. We haven’t taken the time to open up the #1 book, the Bible. We are so broken, we are so busy, and we are in such rush all the time. Rest my dear writer, rest in the peace that He will show you the time, He will give you the words, and provide you with the grace needed to accomplish all that is set before you. Until then, face your demons, forgive some people, be honest with yourself and be honest with God. In the end, it will make for an even better story and HE will be the one to get all the glory!
